IV Sedation Dentistry

Eliminate the stress of dental surgery!

What is IV sedation?

IV sedation involves the delivery of an anti-anxiety and sedation medication through the bloodstream during dental surgery procedures. We can provide different types of IV Sedation from moderate or “sleep” anesthesia to general anesthesia delivered by our wonderful Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. IV sedation helps you take the best nap of your life while getting your dental work done!

How does IV sedation work?

During your dental appointment a small IV will be used to deliver a mild sedative directly to your bloodstream.

Throughout your procedure, the doctor will monitor your pulse, blood pressure, heart rate, EKG, and oxygen levels closely to ensure no adverse reactions occur. You may feel a bit groggy afterward, so you should arrange for a family member or friend to come with you to your appointment. Taking the rest of the day off to relax and recoup is also recommended.

What are the benefits of IV sedation?

  • Sedatives administered intravenously take effect more quickly and are much safer than pills.
  • IV sedation helps patients with a sensitive gag reflex.
  • IV sedation selectively blocks pain sensation without affecting other bodily functions, allowing you to breathe and move independently. This helps the dentist in promptly identifying any abnormalities during the procedure.
  • Multiple procedures can be completed in one visit under IV sedation, reducing the need for numerous appointments. This not only helps ease dental anxiety but also lowers overall dental care expenses.
  • The amnesic effect of IV sedation means patients have minimal recollection of the procedure, including sights, sounds, and smells of the dental office.
