Oral Surgery Post Operative Instructions
PAIN and MEDICATIONS
Discomfort and pain are normal after surgery. Take prescribed medications as directed. Start after care prescriptions immediately upon arriving home. You may take Advil 400mg 2 hrs after taking the prescribed pain medicine if the pain is still not under control. Normal healing can take up to 6 weeks for complete recovery; it is normal to have soreness throughout the healing process. Do not drive while taking your prescription pain medication.
BLEEDING
A rolled up gauze pad has been placed on the extraction site and you may need to change this dressing every 15 minutes for the next hour if it becomes soaked. It is normal for some blood to ooze from the area of surgery for the first 24 hours.
SWELLING and BRUISING
Swelling and bruising is normal after surgery. Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheeks in the area of the extraction for 1-2 days. You may be swollen and sore for up to 14 days.
SALT WATER RINSES
Start the day after surgery doing salt water rinses 2 times a day for 2 weeks. You may use the included irrigation syringe to gently rinse the surgery site if needed to remove food from the area.
SUTURES
If sutures were used they would dissolve and fall out on their own in 1-2 weeks.
DIET
Eat normal. regular meals as soon as you are able after surgery. Cold soft food such as ice cream or yogurt may be the most comfortable for the first day. Drink plenty of fluids!
STRAWS
You may use a straw to drink thin liquids like water or soda. Do not use a straw for thick drinks like a milkshake.
BRUSHING
Do not brush your teeth for the first 24 hours after surgery. After, you may brush your teeth gently, but avoid the area of surgery for 1 week.
DO NOT SMOKE
Smoking will promote bleeding and interfere with healing.
